2014 was a dandy of a year for music.

Sturgill Simpson released one of the best and weirdest country albums of recent memory. David Gray and Counting Crows both showed they had at least one more great record in them. And an Irish kid named Andrew Hozier-Byrne proved that there is still some room on modern radio for bluesy rock confessionals.

Below, you will hear some jaunty folk (Shakey Graves, Quiet Life), some blue-eyed soul (St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Leon Bridges), and some old-fashioned country (Sturgill Simpson, Cahalen Morrison & Eli West).

You’ll hear some sad songs (Bitter Memories, The Greatest Bastard, Better This Way), some love songs (You’re with Me, Marigolden), and a couple songs that sound like they were written 50 or 60 years ago (Mighty Son of Abraham, Better Man).
